When I work with artists I’m so immersed in the project that it feels like all I’m doing is living and breathing it for a while and as soon as that record’s over I’m on to the next thing, I’m immersed in the next person’s life. In fact, if we were to get more philosophical, we could ask whether it’s even possible for a robot or artificial intelligence to create music. So I feel, in a strange way, that we were in a holding pattern. Finally, despite pretending to be robots, one of the recurring themes in Daft Punk’s music is that there is something unique, wonderful, and inexplicable about being human. Everyone talks about ‘Let’s Dance’ but they never talk about ‘Black Tie White Noise’ and ‘Miracle Goodnight’ and ‘China Girl’ and ‘Modern Love’ and ‘Ricochet’ and all this other stuff. With David, our relationship was a very interesting one in that people don’t realise that we’ve done quite a bit of music together. We were doing a record and he and his brother left for a show and only one came back. Its a sort of homage to my youth heroes ( Kraftwerk, Giorgio Moroder, but also Daft Punk ). The songs I enjoy the most from the album are Youth, Season 2 Episode 3, and The Other Side of Paradise. This created a fantastic flow to the album, with one coherent sound and many different viewpoints. “David Bowie introduced me to Stevie Ray Vaughan and I gave the eulogy at Stevie Ray’s funeral. I wanted to make the music I used to listen to when I was a child. The band would then write songs as if coming from these people. It’s hard to accept it, but I’ve had a lot of tragedy in my rock’n’roll life,” he said. Following the death of David Bowie, Rodgers spoke to NME to pay tribute to his friend and collaborator.
